On the first 5th of the fingerboard there are (re)movable halftone (chromatic) frets. These are made of gut strings and put there by the player. Above this 5th the bvdg is played just like a violoncello, except for the thumb position.

The difference with guitar frets is that it is still necessary (or possible) to intonate between two frets. These sounds are of a different quality though. As I want to be able to play quarter tones which have the same sound quality as the ‘normal’ chromatic tones, I put additional frets in between the chromatic ones.
